Praying is incomplete without watching. That is why you should watch and pray always that you may be counted worthy

This has been on my mind for almost 2 months and I am excited to be sharing with you . Before we delve deeper, the main Bible verses for this post are Matthew 24:42-44 and Luke 21:36. They are similar verses about Jesus telling us to watch and pray because we don’t know the hour the Son of Man will come.

In Matthew 24:42-44, Jesus gave the commandment to watch specifically because we do not know when God will return. Actually, I will liken this watch to being observant, I believe we can all relate to this analogy:

When you are expecting guest A, you keep observing through the window to see if they have arrived or not. While you do this, you make sure your house looks spotless to receive guest A. However, if guest B comes to yours without telling you, you will not be as prepared for them and they will catch you unawares.

Just as guest B caught you unawares, Jesus gave the instruction to watch in order to prevent the same thing from happening when God returns.

Noticing the little details as Christians

During the course of my internship, I met a lovely lady called A (for the purpose of this blog). A is a christian who loves God and shares the love with everyone. On a certain day, I remember feeling so tired and ill, I wanted the day to be over already.

However, A noticed and asked me if I was okay. Honestly, I didn’t expect anyone to notice me because I was still new there. Her being observant was everything and more for me because not everyone is that observant.

What that act did was to remind me that when the Son of Man is returning, it will be up to me and you to watch i.e be observant.

Are you up to the task of watching in your environment talk more of the coming of the Son of Man?

Praying without watching

In Luke 21:36, Jesus tells us to : “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

The first thing He said was “Watch” not any other thing. In fact, He has a reason for telling us to watch and pray always. He needs us to do our own part of watching and praying so we can be prepared for when He will come back.

Praying is not complete if you do not watch. God has destined prayer to go along with watching at all times. When you pray for something, you unintentionally watch for its’ arrival. Similarly, there is nothing stopping you from watching for the return of the King if you can pray for it.

The moment you pray for a thing and you do not watch out for it, you are giving it space to catch you unawares. It will certainly catch you.

Will you be ready?

As a child, we always spoke about the return of Jesus at a time we do not expect. One morning, I was awoken with the sound of a trumpet and I was very scared. I thought that Jesus had come back already and I was left behind.

The first thing was to find my family members, imagine my joy when I saw them all. I remember telling my mummy and she was like “The Police are training”.

Now when I think about it, I am happy because I wasn’t left behind. On a more serious note, I was caught unawares by that event and I can’t forget it.

All it takes is to watch and pray to avoid being caught unawares. Will you be ready for the Lord’s coming whenever He comes?
