God’s attributes. That was the topic in my Bible study teachers’ meeting. The manual we use highlighted God as a Spirit with reference to 2 Corinthians 3:17. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” What exactly does it mean?

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
2 Corinthians 3:17 NKJV

Liberty: The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behaviour, or political views. (Source: Google English dictionary)

In listening to the various contributions, this example came to mind:

As a Nigerian child, most adults would never tell you why you shouldn’t do certain things. Instead, they try to scare you away from it. For example, in place of “I don’t want you to go there”, they’ll say “if you go there, ojuju calabar will catch you”. Ojuju calabar meaning something scary.

Having grown with such instilled fear, the mind is bound to certain ways. However, when the Spirit of the Lord enters, light comes to correct these fearful notions.

Frankly speaking when the Bible says “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty”, it means that the Spirit of God frees you from bondage.

Wrong knowledge, instilled fear, and whatever else has the ability to hold you captive.

How does this work then?

As a Christian, the key to get liberty is to read the word of God. The word of God is the main source of light, through which the Spirit of the Lord works.

But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
2 Corinthians 3:16 NIV

Sincerely, the more you read the word, the more liberty you experience. Why? You’re exposing yourself to the light of transformation.

My prayer is that you come to the point of liberty from things previously holding you captive. May God also help you and I to foster atmospheres for the Spirit of the Lord to dwell.

Thank you for reading! Do share your thoughts in the comments, I’ll be reading.

  1. Great post! I really like that you pointed out how this works- knowledge of God’s word being our source of liberty- I think sometimes we know concepts from the bible but haven’t taken the time to process what it really means and it’s always great to have it broken down so well!
