Happy new year (It’s still the first days of the year)!! You made it and God takes all the glory, right?? 2020 was something but we all pray 2021 is a lot better. What do you have in your hands for 2021? What expectations will you be setting this year?
Towards the end of 2019, I wrote an article about looking forward. I believe that article is still relevant, all you need do is switch 2020 with 2021. Click here to read the article!
At the beginning of the year 2020, there was one particular thing I wanted. Can you take a guess? No, it’s not money but it’s quite close because it can be bought with money. A Journal!
There’s something really interesting about getting to write down how grateful you are or the things that happened over the course of the day. Think of it in this manner, you get to write a daily story you can look back on.
In my mind, I already told God what I want, so it won’t be a problem for Him to send someone along with the journal. I even took it further to set an expectation that I will get it as a birthday gift from my friends, the disappointment I felt cannot be expressed in words.
Your expectations for 2021
When you set expectations, do you consider what you have in your hands? Let me explain: At the middle of 2020, after my disappointment faded I suddenly realized that God already answered my prayers. How?
He gave me the money to buy it! There’s a certain way you feel when you realize that what you are stressing over was answered a long time ago. The amusing thing here is that I had this money even before the year began.
This year, before you look outside for the answers to your expectations or prayers, look inwards. More often than not, you already have the answer to your situation if you look at what you have in your hands.
As you set expectations, constantly let this be a reminder. Where I come from, there is a saying: “what you are looking for in a far place, can be found inside your trousers (within)”.
What if they aren’t met?
One of the key lessons from last year is God’s thoughts towards you are good, just as Jeremiah 29:11 says. When your expectations aren’t met, God knows why you shouldn’t get it now.
Personally, I have seen expectations not being met because it was not the right time. Does this ever happen to you? When it comes, you discover you are better equipped to handle it because you are more learned.
If this is the case for you in this year, don’t be discouraged! God knows when the right time is and He is definitely anticipating it.
I’m not saying your expectations won’t be met (Definitely not!). However, in case you ever feel like your expectations aren’t forth-coming, you will understand why.
Are you writing it down?
My mum always says “The faintest ink on paper lasts longer than storing it in your head”. In this case, have you written down your expectations for 2021 yet?
Habakkuk chapter 2 gives a really nice reminder:
‘Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.’
Habakkuk 2:2-3
Make sure you write down those expectations or tell them to the right people because if unspoken, they have the tendency to become danger zones. There’s an article on the blog about this, you can read it here.
This article doesn’t pertain to 2021 solely but can be adapted to the various situations of life. It will help you determine what you have in your hands for these situations. I hope it gives you clarity on what to do and how to go about it.
If you can, you should take up journaling; It gives a wholesome perspective to life. Thank you for reading!

Great article Funmi! And the new design looks really great as well! And about journaling, it’s really nice to be able to look back and see where you were before and even things God did.
Oh wow! I’m actually just noticing this! Thank you Seyi, I know right. Yes, but it takes a lot of intentionality to actually write in them almost everyday.
