A lot has been going on around me for a while. It’s been so hard to unsee many of the things I have seen.  In a world where social media decides, we all have to be careful with what we consume on there. In light of all that, I had the conviction to share understanding God’s word with you.

I’d like to share 3 keys which have worked for me personally. Hopefully, it helps you to build an understanding of God’s word.

1. Give God some quiet time and environment

You, God, Your Bible and a Quiet place

I mentioned in the article Prayer that being in a quiet place helps to increase your communication with God. There’s truly something about staying in a quiet place when you want to hear God or read his word that makes a great difference.

Instances of quiet time with God in the Bible:

‘And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.’ Luke 5:16

‘ But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. ‘ Matthew 6:6

‘And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. ‘ Mark 1:35

2. Don’t be stressed or tired

I’m of the opinion that you can never have full understanding of God’s word whenever you are stressed or tired. From experience, whenever I tried to read my Bible if I was even a bit tired, I’d end up dozing off and not understanding anything.

Whenever you would like to read your Bible, make time out so that you aren’t doing it in the earliest hours of the day when you are still sleepy or late at night when the day’s work has taken its toll on you.

3. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak and open up your understanding

This here my friends is really important! There is an instance Apostle Paul tells us to ask the Holy Spirit for help because we don’t know what we are to pray for.

If we are in need of help to pray, then we certainly need help to read God’s word.

The Holy Spirit has opened my eyes to several verses which I won’t have noticed had I not asked for help.

Besides, It’s possible that every time I read the same verse, I get different understanding as the Holy Spirit ministers to me.

The Bible records a few instances in which only the spirit of God is needed to understand the things of God:

‘For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. ‘ 1 Corinthians 2:11

‘But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. ‘ 1 Corinthians 2:14

‘ … take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. ‘ Luke 12:11-12

Why am I sharing this with you?

I’m of the opinion that everyone should read and master the Bible themselves without relying on anyone to get access to God’s word.

Everyone understands in different ways. We interpret stories differently because we add our individuality to our understanding. That’s why we need the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to what it is God wants us to take from that verse, chapter or book.

God’s word is accessible to you, all you need is the 3 keys I mentioned above.

I pray that God gives you wisdom, understanding and knowledge of his word always. I pray that you’ll never grow weary of God’s word.
