A couple of days ago, I found myself singing the rendition of the song, “Open my eyes of my heart,” by Jordan G. Welch. The particular line that stuck out to me was:
Silence the noise in my heart Lord
My mind has been pondering on this, and here are my musings. To see Jesus clearly, everything that seems to be and is noisy needs to go.
In the book of Matthew, we find our example in Jesus. Where he constantly would take quiet times away from people to commune with the Father.
Matthew 14:22-23 ERV says: Then Jesus made the followers get into the boat. Telling them to go to the other side of the lake. He said he would come later. And He stayed there to tell everyone they could go home. [23] After Jesus said goodbye to the people, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. It was late, and he was there alone.
Frankly, there are so many things that can cause noise in our hearts. Your thoughts on what to eat, what to wear, where you want to go, how much money you need, etc…
Albeit not bad, it creates so much chatter that we miss the things Jesus is saying.
As a child, my maternal grandma, Ma Gbemi, had this analog radio. In our search for the right Yoruba radio station, we’d find some frequencies with so much chatter that we couldn’t hear the words well.
As we’d continue tuning, there would be similar frequencies, just not what we’re looking for. Finally, when we find the right frequency, the noise is silenced, and we hear the words loud and clear.
Just like Ma Gbemi would, keep tuning your heart until all the noise is silenced and all you hear is Jesus.
So, how do you tune your heart?
Let’s close out with Colossians 3:2 NKJV with you: [2] Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Thank you for reading – Funmi

Hii Funmi, I really enjoyed reading this! It’s so relatable, always having background noise. For me both in my head and from life and the world, and both important and unimportant things. Every year at church in Pécs we have a whole day retreat for women, and one of the activities is a silent time, and for me not talking was never an issue but quieting my mind and listening to God is usually very hard, and sometimes I would just give up to be honest, but the reminder here that it’s necessary was great. Haven’t commented in a very long minute, glad to be here again!
Hiya Seyi, I’m so glad it resonated with you ❤️. I’ve been finding it hard to quiet my mind in recent times, so we’re all on the same boat. One step at a time, that’s what matters.
Thank you so much for leaving a comment 💓
