Have you ever heard the saying : “Variety is the spice of life” ? Well I have and I believe the person couldn’t have said it better. If you don’t try new things, you will never know what goes well with you and so forth.

When you start the preparation for a meal, you make sure you have all the ingredients required to make the meal. In other words, if the required ingredients aren’t available, the meal will not turn out as you expect.

Similarly, the Christian life is filled with ideal spices which everyone needs to make the best of Christianity. I’ll be showing and explaining the use of each spice as a requirement for Christianity.

The spices of a Christian Life

Love

Have you ever eaten a meal that didn’t taste good out of love ? Love makes us do the things we never think are possible :). The need for love as a spice is because the Bible tells us that God is love. Ordinarily, if you add God to your Christian life, it automatically becomes half done.

When you add love to the dealings in your life, it helps you to be at ease ( this works for me) . In one of my previous posts, I outlined why love is important and should be unconditional. Check it out xx

‘Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. ‘ 1 John 4:7-8

Patience

This one here is a keeper because everything you do requires a bit or so much of it. Cooking needs patience! Thinking about it now, there’s no meal that doesn’t need patience: if the water isn’t hot to a certain point, the meal doesn’t come out right.

Patience: the act of bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaints

Joy

“Emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by prospect of possessing what one desires.”

I can definitely relate to this spice because my name means “God has given me joy” ( You can check out my story here ). Joy is definitely underrated because people hop at happiness at every given chance but never joy.

I would like to believe that joy is long-term and you choose what you find joy in. Several times in the Bible, joy comes up but one sentence everyone thinks of is:

Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10 NKJV

Faith

I wrote a blog post about Faith with Boundaries a few months ago, if you would like to read it , please check it out here. Faith is the one spice that is made up of many things which are needed to season our lives.

Without Faith, we can’t have a Christian life !!! We can’t even use the other spices because we do not believe in God .

‘Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. ‘ Hebrews 11:1

Grace

God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense (G.R.A.C.E) ! Truly, grace is unmerited : it isn’t due to your own strength or wisdom. It just finds you! Ever gotten something you actually know you didn’t deserve at some point in your life? It was grace.

Being a Christian isn’t all picture perfect, it’s grace that eases the path. It opens doors unknown to you which is why you need it to spice up your life.

Hope

It was amusing for me to find an image for Hope which includes: Faith and Love. These 3 spices go together to produce a balanced spice for the Christian life. We deal with Hope on a daily basis in our various lives : you hope for things you need but do not see and so much more.

When you add the hope spice to your life, you deliberately invite God into your life to do his will and help you out.

Hope: Feeling of expectation and desire for something

Mercy

God had mercy on us and sent his son to die on the cross for us. Likewise, we are asked to show mercy in our daily lives. Why do you need the mercy spice in your life ? You need it because the world isn’t perfect. People will annoy you, despise you, lie against you and so much more.

Do you remember the story of the man who asked Jesus how many times one should forgive their brother?

‘Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.Matthew 18:21-22

Truly, I kept my promise of outlining the different spices and their uses. With the spices in mind, I have chosen to make pancakes for my Christian life meal (I love pancakes) because I find that I can apply the spices to the process and result. Now, it is left to you to decide if you are going to add them to your Christian life or not.
